Synopsis


Written on the Way follows calligrapher Yoon Youngmi, who carries Korea’s Intangible Cultural Heritage—Hangul calligraphy—as she walks the Camino de Santiago. Along the 800km pilgrimage, she writes the names of people from around the world in Hangul and gives them handmade name seals. Through this act, she invites pilgrims to rediscover their identities through a new script, creating moments of connection that transcend language and culture. Her journey reveals Hangul as more than a writing system—it becomes a bridge of empathy, memory, and cultural exchange. This film captures the quiet power of writing in motion.

Director's Statement


Following Korean calligrapher Yoon Youngmi as she walks the Camino de Santiago with brush and ink, carrying the spirit of Hangul calligraphy—designated Korea’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. She writes names of international pilgrims in Hangul and offers them handmade seals. Through this unfamiliar script, they rediscover their identity and share quiet moments of emotional connection. Hangul becomes more than a writing system—it becomes a cultural bridge between people and memories. This documentary highlights the beauty of Hangul and the meaning of expression, reminding the world of its value on Hangul Day and beyond.
