In one of North Macedonia’s toughest neighbourhoods, 14-year-old Sadije is the only girl in her wrestling club, raised as the family’s son, and now must fight her own battles as she grows into a young matriarch.

Synopsis

In North Macedonia’s toughest neighbourhood, 14-year-old Sadije is the only girl in her all-boys wrestling club and the sole Albanian on the national team. At home, she steps into an old tradition—becoming the family’s ‘son’ to secure respect in the household and become a young matriarch. On the mat, she uses this same role to hold her ground in a macho sport. As a minority girl fighting for space in two worlds, Sadije must decide if this identity is her shield—or another cage she’ll one day have to break.

Director's Statement

When I first met Sadije, I saw how she quietly carries her family’s hopes like a son, in an Albanian-Muslim household shaped by a post-conflict past. Wrestling became her way to claim respect in a male world while bearing deep expectations. This is an intimate, observational coming-of-age film about how she bends old customs to push for a future of her own: a breadwinner-in-training, a “king” among boys. Set in a neighbourhood still marked by division, Sadije’s story reveals how tradition can trap and protect all at once—and how one girl tries to twist it into freedom.
