Synopsis

As the last Korean survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki enter their final years, August, Again follows 92-year-old survivor Park Jungsoon and second-generation descendant Han Jeongsun in Hapcheon, South Korea. While Park fights to preserve the testimony of Korean hibakusha, Jeongsun cares for her disabled son and confronts growing scientific evidence that radiation's effects may extend across generations. Interweaving intimate family stories with groundbreaking genetic research, the film reveals how the atomic bombings continue to shape lives nearly 80 years later, raising urgent questions of memory, justice, and the enduring human cost of nuclear war. 

Director's Statement

August, Again began with a question: why had I never learned that 10% of Hiroshima’s atomic bomb victims were Korean? Through the intertwined lives of a first-generation survivor and her descendants, the film explores inherited trauma, memory, and justice. Blending intimate observation with emerging scientific research, it reveals how nuclear violence continues across generations. Contrasting Hapcheon’s quiet landscapes with institutional spaces, the film reflects the tension between personal grief and political indifference. I hope it encourages audiences to confront the enduring human cost of war and the urgent need for accountability, remembrance, and peace.
