Synopsis
Dr. Jung Hyun-chae, who worked as a doctor for 40 years before retiring, is now challenging himself with "thanatology," the study of death and the spiritual world beyond. He engages in conversations with colleagues, family, and the general public to accept death without fear and even attempts to communicate with his own impending death. One autumn evening, he writes a letter to his daughter, sharing his reflections on his attempts to "conversation with my death" through his thanatology research. This documentary observes his relentless exploration and courageous endeavors.
Director's Statement
Death is an inevitable process for all humans, yet everyone wishes to forget this truth. Through this film, we hope to provide an opportunity to directly confront and question death, which lies at the pinnacle of fear. We also aim to trace contemporary images of death. Our documentary, A Conversation with My Death, will explore the cultural records of how people of this era imagine and contemplate death, situated between the boundaries of science and religion.
