Synopsis
Okuma, same age as me, has been tried 15 times by Kyoto university, which is trying to demolish Yoshida dormitory, which secured low dormitory fees through student autonomy. Ahead of his final trial, he returned as a Kyoto University's graduate student to protect it. The Ferry Sewol sank in the year I entered an art school in Korea. As I began to doubt the social structure and became interested in the student movement in Japan, I visited Yoshida dormitory and met Okuma. Despite various contradictions in Korean university society, the student community after COVID-19 rapidly stagnated, and I, who lost motivation, decided to meet Okuma again, who is firmly protesting. The trial and our campus life will end next year. I would like to meet him who made the choice to confront the irrationality of the system rather than entering society, and confirm that our questions were valuable.
Director's Note
Okuma and I studied hard from the countryside to the city to go to college. The name of the university we entered with such effort remains a lifelong social status. But I don't think the university I graduated deserves to control my life. The professors was disappointing, and trying to resist the absurdity of the university, I found it difficult to adapt to the world outside school. I came back to graduate school to suspend my life. On the other hand, Okuma still has a passion for school. He came back to school because he had something to study while fighting against the school. I try to find a reason to go to school through him. Through me and Okuma's graduation and advancement into society, I want to send a message to young people who go to college "nevertheless" not to stop asking questions about the small society of school.
Director Park Cheol-woo has become interested in the stories hidden in the society since he started filmmaking. In 2021, he directed the full-length documentary <Camino de SANGJARU> and is also working as a cinematographer. | |
