Logline

A Vietnamese American woman uncovers two sisters and a legacy of family abuse, now she must make peace with her past.

Synopsis

Four decades after the Vietnam War fractured her family, Juliet, a Vietnamese American woman, undertakes a journey to reconcile her past. She returns to the scene of her mother’s death to confront her unresolved trauma and offer forgiveness to the drunk driver she holds responsible for tearing her family apart. Instead she discovers the truth behind her mother’s death, two siblings she never really knew, and a family history rooted in war, loss, and abuse. Through the lens of sisterhood, Together explores healing and the path to empowerment by reclaiming one's own narrative.

Director's Statement

In Asian cultures worldwide we are taught to be silent, respect elders, and never disclose problems outside the family. Breaking these unspoken rules can cause ostracization and shame. By creating this film, we will explore family separation and childhood trauma through a wide lens and begin to dismantle the long-ingrained culture in which seeking help is seen as a sign of weakness instead of a form of empowerment. By creating strong role models we can help change the social hierarchies that perpetuate domestic violence and empower all women, across the Asian diaspora, to speak out about the abuses they face.

	Yasmin Mistry is an Emmy-nominated animator and award-winning filmmaker, who blends creative mediums to tell character-driven stories with an intimate lens. Her work has been seen on PBS and at festivals such as DOC NYC, Tribeca, SXSW and Ji.hlava.		Thu-Huong Heather Hoang is a Vietnamese American producer and filmmaker, born and raised in California. Currently based in Brooklyn, New York, she has creatively produced & edited for VICE, Refinery29, MTV, Global Refuge, and small employee-owned businesses.
