Synopsis

One day, my grandmother in Japan came to Korea and called me by my Japanese name. I had been hiding that name and refusing to learn my mother's language, but I tried to be a good granddaughter to her. At those times, I’ve felt empty inside. Growing up amid the unique historical circumstances between the two countries, I wonder what I have lost. Swept up in what feels like an eternal conflict, I board a ship bound for the Ryukyu Islands, my mother's homeland.

Director’s Statement

I am half Korean and half Japanese. I was born in Japan and moved to Korea, my father's country, when I was four. In school, learning about the history of violence committed by Imperialist Japan against Korea left me feeling guilty, so I erased my Japanese identity during my childhood. I still continue to question how individuals come to inherit the historical deeds of their predecessors. It is also very difficult for me to talk about these thoughts with other people.
